Since my last message, many things have happened, which I think are important to share with you, as they represent progress in tobacco control in Europe. Last week, MEPs sent a very clear message urging the European Commission by voting for not to renew, extend or renegotiate the agreement with PMI, which expires next July. Read more...

Registration closing soon for ENSP Conference on Tobacco Control

Due to a high level of interest and a large number of people signing up, registrations for the ENSP Conference on Tobacco Control will close early. Important: Please ensure that you complete your registration by Wednesday 17th March. If you are intending to attend the session at the European Parliament, you must fill in the security form, otherwise access to the venue will be denied.

ERS and ENSP welcome the European Parliament’s vote to reject controversial EU-PMI agreement

On 9th March 2016, the European Parliament voted by a resounding majority for a text in a motion for a resolution that rejects the Philipp Morris International (PMI) agreement on illicit trade of tobacco products. The collaboration was first agreed in July 2004 and its extension is currently being discussed by the European Commission. Read more...
Meet Andrea Glahn, ENSP new Project Assitant

Before joining ENSP's Secretariat in Brussels as the new Project Assistant, Andrea has worked with EU funded projects in the fields of health and education at the Danish regional office to EU, ZealandDenmark EU Office, and with public affairs and communications in the sector of medical technology at the Brussels based trade association MedTech Europe.
Andrea holds a Bachelor in Anthropology from the University of Copenhagen and a Master in European Studies with specific focus on European healthcare policy, from Université Libre de Bruxelles. A Danish national, Andrea speaks fluently English and French and has a good command of German and Spanish.
She will work more specifically with all the EU joint-projects, as well as taking part in the general activity of ENSP.

World No Tobacco Day 2016:
Get ready for plain packaging


Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

For World No Tobacco Day, 31 May 2016, WHO and the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control are calling countries to get ready for plain (standardized) packaging of tobacco products. Read more...

Tobacco Cessation Guidelines for High risk populations Project

On 16 February 2015, Marius Nasta Pneumology Institute and the representatives of the over 250 organizations of Romania Breathes Coalition hosted a press conference in Bucharest, with the participation of HE the US Ambassador to Romania, the President’s Office and the Minister of Health. The event celebrated the adoption of the law 15/2016 amending the law 349/2002 on preventing and fighting against the effects of tobacco products consumption and welcomed the significant contributions to this process. The new anti-smoking rules will enter into force starting March 16. Read more...
