ENSP International Conference on Tobacco Control

The 2nd Annual International Conference of the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention will be hosted in Athens, Greece (24-26 May) is just a few days away.

More than 270 participants from 47 countries will join 6 plenary sessions, 24 parallel sessions, 8 closed project meetings and a workshop, all on debated and timely topics: tobacco control and global development goals, Article 5.3, the FCTC-TPD implementation, second-hand tobacco smoke and e-cigarettes emissions, NGOs advocacy, Regional health promotion, IT communication by health professionals, E-cigarettes, Tobacco economics, Illicit trade, Tobacco dependence treatment, Cessation and Article 14, Society and human rights and Global next steps of tobacco control.

Celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Network, ENSP will present its Athens Declaration to the members, which expresses its future aspirations in tobacco control and further smoking denormalisation.

On 26 May, during the closing session, strong commitment and great achievements of ENSP members and friends throughout the years will be marked by a special 20th anniversary awards ceremony.

Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), highlighting the health and additional risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is "Tobacco – a threat to development."

About the campaign

  • It will demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic well-being of their citizens.
  • It will propose measures that governments and the public should take to promote health and development by confronting the global tobacco crisis.

ENSP-ERS Celebration of World No Tobacco Day 2017
Join ENSP and ERS for the celebration of World No Tobacco Day on 31 May 2017 in the Press Club Europe, Brussels. This high-level meeting on tobacco control sets a strong focus on the WHO World No Tobacco Day Theme 2017: Tobacco - A threat to development. Launching the Europe United Race Against Tobacco, this event aims at discussing in the form of a "marathon race" ways for European countries to join forces to reach the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the ocntext of FCTC. This will be an unprecedental call for unity and commitment of all countries to tackle the tobacco pandemic.

WALCE and partners:
WHO FCTC Article 14 – Time to prioritise tobacco cessation and dependence treatment.

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2017, Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe (WALCE), in partnership with the ENSP, European Respiratory Society (ERS), the European Lung Foundation (ELF) and Insieme Contro il Cancro, organises a double event in Brussels to promote smoking cesation interventions and activities around Europe.

On 31 May at the EU Parliament in Brussels, a high-level round-table titled “WHO FCTC Article 14 – Time to prioritise tobacco cessation and dependence treatment.” will be hosted from 13:00 to 15:00 by Italian MEP Alberto Cirio. The conference will be moderated by MEP Gilles Pargneaux and the program includes many experts in the field of smoking cessation. The aim of this session is to provide delegates with valuable information and good practices in order to advocate for the implementation of WHO FCTC art.14 at national level.

Exhibition on Smoking Cessation
Place de la Monnaie, Brussels - 30 & 31 May
In addition to the European Parliament event held on World No Tobacco Day, WALCE and partners organise a two-day exhibition on Place de la Monnaie in Brussels, under the title “Go out of the Tunnel. Don’t burn away your future” on 30 and 31 May. The exhibition consist of a structure shaped as a giant cigarette, where pulmonologists will provide the general public with smoking cessation counselling, educational materials and spirometry tests. Smokers who want to quit will be given advice as well as referral to local stop smoking service.

ENSP members celebrate World No Tobacco Day 2017 with national events and activities
Denmark announces tobacco free vision with national partnership
On 31 May 2017 Denmark officially joins the group of nations with tobacco endgames when they launch a new partnership called Smokefree Future “Røgfri Fremtid” by the end of May. The partnership will unfold as a nationwide campaign.

Tobacco free nation by 2030

No children or young adults are smoking in Denmark by 2030. Moreover, no more than five percent of the adult population are smoking. So rings the vision of a new partnership between The Danish Cancer Society and the Danish foundation TrygFonden.

Røgfri Fremtid is a large-scale partnership working towards a tobacco free nation within the next 15 years seeking to engage the Danish population to take an active part in becoming a tobacco free nation by 2030.

Italy celebrates World No Tobacco Day with three large events
  • 31 May 2017 - Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori and Associazione Salute Donna: Women Health Association organise World No Tobacco Day event. Interventions will be dedicated to motivations against smoking, with interactive paths and new experiments on the primary and secondary tobacco smoke health danger.
Ukraine holds exhibition and press briefing prior to vote on the new draft tobacco law
On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2017, Advocacy Center "Life", Ukraine, holds an exhibition in the Ukrainian Parliament and conducts a press-briefing with MPs on 23-26 May.
A new anti-tobacco draft law #2820 is planned to go through a first reading in the Ukrainian Parliament on 25 May. The law is based on the EU Tobacco Products Directive. Earlier this month, Advocacy Center "Life" has held public action activities next to the Parliament and offices of the political parties demanding to adopt anti-tobacco draft laws.
Romania says "Today I Don't Smoke"
On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, May 31st 2017, in Tg Mures, Romania, the Symposium “Today I Don’t Smoke” will be held. The event is organised by the Pulmonology Romanian Society – the Tabaccology Section, in collaboration with the Eldad Association from Tg-Mures, the Mures County School Inspectorate, the Mures County General Direction of Protective and Social Assistance of Children, the Mures County Clinical Hospital.
The Symposium is a part of a larger project ongoing since 2016 and its objectives are represented on one side by establishing the dimensions and characteristics of smoking among young people within the professional maternal assistance, and, on the other side by presentation of the results coming from involving these young people in the process of informing and preventing smoking.

The event will be honoured by the presence of Mihaltan Florin Professor, PhD, MD – a landmark name in fighting against smoking in Romania Doina Tode and ENSP Board member, Corina Marginean PhD, MD – president of the Tobaccology Section within the Romanian Society of Pulmonology and other experts.
Slovenia recognises the threat of tobacco and brings together the expertise of public officials and civil society
On 30 May 2017 National Institute for Public Health, Regional Unit Ljubljana, will host the conference/consultation dedicated to this year's WNTD topic. The event is supported by 2 ENSP members (Slovenian Coalition for Public Health, Environment and Tobacco control and No Excuse Slovenia) who will present on the day among with high-level representatives of the Health Ministry and the office of WHO in Slovenia.

Georgia celebrates new tobacco control law together with World No Tobacco Day 2017
On 17 May 2017, The Parliament of Georgia adopted amendments to the Tobacco Control Law with a whopping 85 votes for and only one against.

The amendments to the Tobacco Control Law envisions that from May 1, 2018, smoking of tobacco, including electronic cigarette and chillum, will be prohibited in all enclosed areas except for houses, psychiatric clinics, penitentiary facilities and casinos. Tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorships will also be prohibited, including display of tobacco products point-of-sale outside (inside from 2021). The amendments also require health warning to be increased from the current 30% to 65% of the packs.
For World No Tobacco Day 2017, the Tobacco Control Alliance Georgia and the committee of the Parliament of Georgia plan to organize a special reception regarding adaptation of new law in the building of Parliament by participation of MPs, Members of Gov, Ambassadors, international organizations, NGOs, etc.

Moldova: WNTD 2017 as a milestone to report on implementation of the national Tobacco Control Law

On 29 May 2017 Center for Health Policies and Studies (PAS Center) in the Republic of Moldova is organising a press conference to present the results of the second monitoring of restaurants, bars, health care and educational institutions they have conducted in order to control the compliance with the provisions of Law № 278 of 14.12.2007 "On Tobacco and Tobacco Products", in particularly with smokefree regulations.

From 31 May to 4 June 2017, PROI, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is organising the exhibition “Tobacco - a threat to development in BiH” at the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The goal of the exhibition is to demonstrate the threats that the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development and consequences of tobacco consumption in BiH, including its health, economic and environmental effects.

During the opening of exhibition, PROI plans a press conference and panel discussion with the representatives from the EU Delegation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, WHO Country Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the World Bank, Federal Ministry of Health, National Parliament and PROI.

Unfairtobacco, Germany opens the exhibition
"Big Tobacco: Profits & Lies"

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2017, the updated version of the Unfairtobacco exhibition "Big Tobacco: Profits & Lies - Tobacco or Sustainability" opens at the Vivantes Hospital Neukölln in Berlin on May 29th.

The exhibition offers a unique tobacco control approach by revealing the journey of tobacco from seedbed to butt. The 24 displays show the impact of tobacco use on people and the environment. They offer information on tobacco use, on tobacco growing countries and farmers as well as the main actors of the tobacco industry. Several displays cover trade aspects such as power imbalances, foreign debt service and industry strategies, while others present alternative livelihoods to tobacco growing.

The opening of the exhibition will be chaired by German Member of Parliament Lothar Binding and Dr. Eibo Krahmer, the CEO of Vivantes GmbH. Sonja von Eichborn from Unfairtobacco will introduce the exhibition which will remain at the hospital for the whole month of June. The CEO of the German Network of Smokefree Hospitals (DNRfK), Christa Rustler, will also join the event at the certified smokefree hospital Vivantes Neukölln.
