ENSP Fact Sheet Series 2020

"Ban on Menthol Cigarettes"

20 May 2020 – European Union Member States shall prohibit the placing on the market of tobacco products with a characterising flavour

An EU wide ban on menthol cigarettes sales goes into effect on May 20 following the Directive 2014/40/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 3 April 2014 on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States concerning the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco and related products and repealing Directive 2001/37/EC.

The ban will apply on menthol cigarettes, but also on capsule, click on, click & roll, dual menthol cigarettes or roll-your-own that comes in the same packaging. However, the directive does not include mentholated papers and filters sold separately from RYO tobacco products. There is no sell-through period of menthol cigarettes, meaning that from 20 May 2020 it will be forbidden to continue selling. Retailers must sell their remaining stock until the due date.
The European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP), through its national members and partners, will support and monitor the full implementation of the characterizing flavours ban as requested by Directive 2014/40/EU.

World No Tobacco Day

This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic, and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.

World No Tobacco Day 2020:
The Secret is out. #TobaccoExposed

#TobaccoExposed

This global campaign will debunk myths and expose devious tactics employed by these industries.

It will provide young people with the knowledge required to easily detect industry manipulation and equip them with the tools to rebuff such tactics, thereby empowering young people to stand up against them.

This is especially important right now as studies show that smokers have a higher risk for a severe case of coronavirus. WHO calls on all young people to join the fight to become a tobacco-free generation.

Save the date!

#TobaccoExposed: protecting youth from deceptive tobacco industry marketing

2 June 2020 - Webinar and Award Ceremony to mark World No Tobacco Day

The webinar, titled #TobaccoExposed: protecting youth from deceptive tobacco industry marketing will focus on this year’s WNTD theme and highlight the importance of protecting youth from tobacco industry manipulation. After years of progress in enacting regulations to reduce tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship, countries in Europe and all over the world are faced with an onslaught of old and new industry tactics to attract young consumers – some through exploiting domestic loopholes in advertising restrictions; others through new, less regulated channels. It will also allow for the tobacco control community to make a joint plea for action to curb tobacco consumption, aggressively promoted by the tobacco industry to children and youth and for accelerating the implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in Europe.

The webinar is organised by Smoke Free Partnership (SFP), the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP), the European Respiratory Society (ERS), the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), and the European Cancer Patients Coalition (ECPC), with the participation of the WHO Regional Office for Europe. The award ceremony will recognise the European recipients of the 2020 WHO World No Tobacco Day Award.

Further details on the programme and participation will be communicated shortly by the organisers.
