ENSP interview with the Head of the WHO –

FCTC Secretariat, Dr Adriana Blanco Marquizo

In an interview with the Head of the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC, the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention addressed a few questions related to the greatest challenges faced by the Convention Secretariat in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion tackled the topic of collaboration with NGOs in Europe, as well as the news on the preparation of COP9 and MOP2.
"One important thing to keep in mind during these difficult times is the need to make clear that tobacco control remains a crucial issue, during and after the pandemic, as tobacco is not only a health problem but also a development issue." said Dr Blanco.

She also provided some insights about the future plans of the WHO-FCTC Secretariat regarding the progress with the Global Strategy to Accelerate Tobacco Control, and further steps for Protocol implementation at a national level.

The Convention Secretariat recognises the wealth of expertise and knowledge within civil society organisations

Dr Blanco also underlines the importance of civil society, as its role is, on one hand, specified multiple times in the WHO FCTC, and on the other hand, in the second strategic target of the Global Strategy to Accelerate Tobacco Control 2019–2025. The Convention Secretariat recognises the useful insights coming from the civil society organisations in different fields such as taxation, economics, tobacco cessation, litigation and legal matters and tobacco-free investments, and believes that further exchanges of information will be vital to a greater success of the implementation of the Convention and the Protocol.

"Within the 53 Parties in the WHO European Region, we see a gap between efforts in some leading Parties and other Parties where implementation of the Convention is very weak. Specific tailored assistance and support could be provided to those Parties by civil society organizations, in line with government commitments, the national context and the political situation. Civil society can and should use their specific insight and knowledge of the local landscape to work with specific Parties at local, national and regional levels, providing tailored assistance as and when needed."

UICC Fellowships for Cancer Prevention

UICC will provide fellowships for cancer prevention next year and highly encourages tobacco control individuals to apply! The Fellowship Programme plays a major role in UICC’s mission. Alongside other capacity building offers, it aims to reduce the global cancer burden by facilitating the exchange of knowledge, expertise and technical skills. The programme also enables networking and collaboration across institutions and countries.

Starting with 2nd October 2020, candidates can apply for fellowship visits to take place in 2021. You can apply for two programmes:

  • Technical Fellowships (Transfer of cancer control knowledge, skills and techniques through one-month international visits)
  • Bourses pour l'Afrique francophone (BAF), specifically intended for healthcare professionals and other professionals working in the field of cancer and based in French-speaking Africa.

As UICC fellows come from around the globe and work in all areas of cancer control, the fellowships will allow them to visit world-renowned institutions in order to learn best practices and new skills.

Launch of 2020 Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index

The launch of the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index (Global Tobacco Index) 2020 will take place virtually, on November 17 at 12:30 (GMT). The global survey examines how governments are responding to tobacco industry interference and protecting their public health policies from commercial and vested interests as required under the WHO FCTC. You will learn more about civil society reports from participating nations to rank 57 countries which cover about 80% of the world's population. The report, initiated as a regional index by South-East Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) in 2014, is produced by the Global Centre for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), a STOP partner, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Register for this event until November 12!

17th European Angiology Days

Organised every year as Academic meetings by VAS with the collaboration of UEMS Division of Angiology/Vascular Medicine, the 17th edition of the European Angiology Days will be live-streamed, giving the opportunity to everyone interested in this topic to participate in scientific workshops and learn more about different European Cooperative projects. The 17th EAD aims to offer high-level updating on one topic integrating clinical and research aspects, as well as to divulge information and receive contributions on the progress of the European educational and research projects proposed by VAS. The event’s goal is to create a public space, where colleagues from other specialties could debate on a theme with a multidiscipline approach to arrive at the layout of guidelines.
