"Tobacco Industry Tactics"

ENSP is pleased to host the webinar “Tobacco Industry” that will be held on the 2nd  December 2020, from 13:00 to 14:30 CET, as part of the ENSP-ECTC Conference – The Online Edition

The tobacco industry, which is responsible for more than 8 million deaths annually worldwide, has never taken responsibility for all the diseases and deaths its products have caused and continue to cause to its customers, governments and society. Yet, it is exploiting the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic to provide resources to countries badly in need of them, framing itself as being “part of the solution”—a classic tactic of the tobacco industry to get close to governments and enable it to interfere with, derail and undermine health policies aimed at reducing tobacco use.

Even though more countries adopt comprehensive tobacco control, the tobacco industry is working to undermine government efforts in order to hook new users and push new products. They have even gone so far as to try and take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic when countries are desperate for resources.

Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC Guidelines recommends governments to ensure transparency by requiring periodic disclosures from the tobacco industry about its activities and practices.

Article 5.3 of the WHO FCTC Guidelines provides a range of preventive actions governments can take to protect their tobacco control policies from being sabotaged by commercial and vested interests.

The tobacco industry will not stop interfering. Civil society can expose and counter industry interference, but it is in the hands of governments to halt it altogether.

Join the webinar to learn more about this topic. Registrations are open until 1st December 2020, 20:00 (CET).

"Novel Tobacco Products - New Age of

the Global Epidemic"

As a part of the ENSP-ECTC Series of Webinars, the hot topic of novel tobacco products will be addressed during the session on Thursday, December 3 (13:00 - 14:30 CET), under the title "Novel Tobacco Products: New Age of the Global Epidemic".

Novel tobacco products raise endless number of questions that have to be urgently answered and acted upon.
How do we protect adolescents from introduction to smoking and stop its renormalisation? Do novel products threaten smoking bans and other effective tobacco control achievements? How do we react to harm-reduction claims of the tobacco industry? What do we know about second-hand exposure to the e-cigarettes aerosol? And most importantly - what kind of measures do governments and societies should undertake to address this new epidemic?

The programme will feature the presentations on the regulation aspect of heated tobacco products and e-cigarettes, research data on health effects of novel products and case studies from a few European countries. The detailed agenda will be disseminated shortly.

"Using Point of Sale Investigations to Successfully Advance TAPS Policy"

Together with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, ENSP will host another webinar on Tuesday, December 15, from 13:30 to 15:00 (CET).

Entitled "Using Point of Sale Investigations to Successfully Advance TAPS Policy: Case Studies from Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Bosnia Herzegovina", this event is also organised under the umbrella of the ENSP-ECTC online edition.

While the world's biggest tobacco companies - British American Tobacco, Imperial Brands, Japan Tobacco, and Philip Morris International - claim only to market their deadly products to adults, point of sale promotional tactics associated with these companies such as posters, displays at children's eye-level, flavored tobacco products, and tobacco products positioned next to candies and sweets are consistently found at points of sale around the world. In this webinar, tobacco control advocates from Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Bosnia Herzegovina will share findings of point of sale investigations examining common promotional tactics observed in Eurasia and discuss how these findings were used to generate public awareness about tobacco industry efforts to addict a new generation of young consumers and bolster policy advocacy campaigns to advance Tobacco Advertising, Promotion, and Sponsorships bans.
