WNTD Statement by Health and Food Safety Commissioner Stella Kyriakides
|

|
As part of the WNTD 2021 mobilisation, the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety has made a powerful statement. Ms. Stella Kyriakides stressed the importance of smoking cessation and that people should be encouraged to strengthen their motivation to quit smoking.
"My message is simple:
quitting
is saving your life:
every moment is good to quit, even if you have been smoking forever.
”
The Commissioner also notes the positive outcome of smoking cessation, especially for the young generation, as these measures aim to protect them from a dependence that can last a lifetime and lead to death.

8 June 2021: Final agenda for
World No Tobacco Day 2021 Webinar and Ceremony
|

|
The Smoke Free Partnership and the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention with the support of the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe are hosting the World No Tobacco Day 2021 conference, taking place on 8 June 2021 (14:00 - 15:30 CET).
The conference is titled “Tobacco free policy-making for a tobacco free Europe” and will focus on exposing, discussing and counteract tobacco industry efforts to delay and distort policy processes to prevent progress in tobacco control. |

The event will have two main parts: in the first part, we will organise a high-level panel discussion between experts, advocates and policy makers who will discuss tobacco industry interference tactics and ways in which policy makers and advocates in different countries have counteracted them. We will also address industry’s attempts to take advantage of the COVID-19 epidemic in the past year to whitewash its reputation and to re-gain a seat at the policy making table.
In the second part, a virtual award ceremony will be organised, facilitated by WHO EURO, to honour and recognise the European recipients of the 2021 WHO World No Tobacco Day Award.

10 June 2021: ENSP Scientific Webinar
Effects and Challenges in Enforcing Ban on Flavoured Tobacco Products

ENSP webinar entitled, “Effects and Challenges in Enforcing Ban on Flavoured Tobacco Products” will take place on Thursday, 10th June 2021, 14:00-17:00 CET (8:00-11:00 EST).
Findings and conclusions on attitudes toward tobacco flavour ban from EUREST-PLUS and ITC studies will be presented along with the EU methodology for testing tobacco products for characterising flavours. Furthermore, the programme will feature cases on tobacco industry tactics against tobacco flavour ban.
Tobacco and vaping industry representatives are not accepted to attend this event. The same rule applies to any entity or individual advancing their interests linked to the tobacco and vaping industry in a commercial or non-commercial manner.
There is a fundamental and irreconcilable conflict between the tobacco industry’s interests and public health policy interests (WHO-FCTC Art.5.3 – Guiding principles).

9 and 16 June 2021: CNPT International Webinar
Tobacco, Environment and Climate Change

The CNPT announced both programmes for The International Webinar:
Tobacco, environment and climate change / Tabaco, medio ambiente y cambio climático, which will be held on 9 and 16 June, with simultaneous translation in English and Spanish.
The programme of these sessions covers the subjects of the environmental impact of tobacco production; the environmental consequences of tobacco product waste; and tobacco, climate change, and other 2021 global threats in regards to public health and climate change.

The debate over e-cigarettes in light of the new EC Report
|

|
A recent article published by EURACTIV addresses the Commission's decision regarding potential different regulation of electronic cigarettes. The two main areas which need improvement are enforcement at the national level and better consideration of new market developments, such as novel tobacco products. |
|
|
|
|
Tobacco industry representatives have criticised the decision to include new tobacco products in the same category as traditional products. However, the ENSP supports the decision to reject the harm reduction trend, as there is evidence that e-cigarettes pose a high risk of continuing to smoke and even encourage more adults to start smoking.
"Meanwhile, anti-tobacco NGOs such as the European Network for Smoking and Tobacco Prevention (ENSP) hailed the Commission’s recent assessment, saying many of their findings were reflected in the document."

SFP statement on the Commission's Report
|

Smoke Free Partnership welcomes the implementation report on the EU Tobacco Products Directive and calls for a swift and efficient revision of its provisions, to help achieve the ambition for a tobacco free generation.
In their statement, SFP points to the need to review the guideline to strengthen the TPD provisions on various topics, and in this revision, to better ensure compliance with the FCTC Article 5.3 and its guidelines in order to maintain the independence from the tobacco industry. In addition, Member States should be provided with a clear legislative and implementation framework for better enforcement of the Directive.

Alliance Contre le Tabac Campaign: Free Women ("Femmes libres")
|
|

|
Alliance Contre le Tabac launched the latest denormalisation campaign "Free Women", organised in collaboration with the French Federation of Cardiology, which deals with female smoking and encourages women to stand up for themselves without smoking. On 27 May, the ACT organised the press point “Tobacco, this obstacle to women's freedom”. |
|
|
|
|
In addition, on 31 May, during World No Tobacco Day, ACT officially launched the campaign by broadcasting the “Free Women” spot carried by Wendie Renard. The campaign will run until the end of June. A second spot will be published and will feature influencer Enjoy Phoenix's testimonial. |
|
|
|
|
Throughout June, influencers are hosting live sessions on Instagram to answer questions from their community about smoking among women and the freedom to quit or not to smoke. |
|

|
|
Congratulations to the winners of 2021 Global Media Competition!
|
|

|
The initiative aims to raise awareness on how the tobacco industry conceals the harms caused by its products. Participants submitted their works in 3 categories (posters, short videos, and infographics) under the 2021 topic of the GMC “Lies & Cover-Ups: Time to #MakeTobaccoPay”.
ENSP supported the 2021 edition of the Competition and would like to thank all participants and congratulate the winners! |

Tobacco Dependence Treatment Guidelines 2021

The ENSP Guidelines for evidence-based smoking cessation are the most recent and globally up-to-date systematic clinical guidelines for smoking cessation and were continuously published and updated from 2011 according to best-practice standards in clinical guideline development. We are happy to announce the release of the updated 2021 edition for the following languages: Spanish, Russian, Romanian, and Arabic.
