"DG SANTE has made it a priority to identify, disseminate and transfer best practices in order to make progress in health promotion and in disease prevention in Europe. DG SANTE also hopes these efforts will help reach the Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one-third by 2030, through prevention and treatment, and to also help reach the nine UN/WHO global voluntary targets for health." |

The European Commission launches
Knowledge Centre to fight Cancer

|
The Knowledge Centre on Cancer has been launched by the European Commission, being the first action implemented under Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. It is organised as an online platform acting as an independent knowledge organism, gathering in one place all information and trends on cancer, mapping the evidence and providing support to policies, as well as coordinating different actions related to the fight against cancer.
Commissioner Kyriakides delivered an insightful speech related to the launch of the knowledge centre, outlining three other Cancer Plan initiatives that will be soon implemented: |

"First, to improve screening for early cancer detection and treatment, we have the new European Cancer Imaging Initiative. We will launch testing and experimentation facilities and a digital innovation hub towards the end of this year, with the image repository to follow next year.
Second, this year we will launch Member State grants for the EU Network linking National Comprehensive Cancer Centres.
And looking further ahead, we will work with Member States and stakeholders to update and extend the Council Recommendation on cancer screening."

ENSP Brochure 2021: Ending tobacco epidemic, an essential step for beating cancer

Every year, 3.5 million people in the EU are diagnosed with cancer, and 1.3 million die from it. Over 40% of cancer cases are preventable. Without reversing current trends, it could become the leading cause of death in the EU. In 2020, the Commission released its Europe’s beating cancer plan aiming at reducing the cancer burden for patients, their families, and health systems. Tobacco is a great risk factor for cancer, often still unknown and underestimated. Thus, every month in 2021, ENSP dedicates a section of "The Network" to a certain type of cancer and its link to tobacco. |

27 July 2021: Launch of the WHO Report on the global tobacco epidemic

|
The global launch of the eighth WHO Report on the global tobacco epidemic will take place on 27 July 2021, from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST. The publication aims at tracking the progress made by countries in tobacco control since 2008 and addressing new and emerging products.
Multiple interpretation options will be available during this event: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. |

18 October 2021: The Leadership Summit on Tobacco Control

This one-day virtual event will convene under the theme ‘
Navigating Change’, and will address the changing political, economic and social landscape of tobacco control.
Register now via the links below! Participants from low and lower middle-income countries, as well as students and nurses from around the world, can apply to attend the Summit for free. Applicants will be asked to submit a 300-word statement explaining how their work in the tobacco field will contribute to ending the tobacco epidemic. Applications for sponsored registration will be open until 23 July 2021. |

ERS open letter "Increasing the early diagnosis of lung cancer in Europe"
|

|
Early diagnosis and detection of lung cancer is crucial for saving lives, as when cancer is detected earlier, successful treatment is more likely. MEPs must commit to increasing early diagnosis by 20% by 2030 as part of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, to target the biggest cancer killer in Europe.
The European Respiratory Society (ERS) and 29 partner organisations have issued an open letter (
Increasing the early diagnosis of lung cancer in Europe: an essential milestone to tackle the biggest cancer killer) to the European Parliament’s Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA), ahead of the presentation of BECA’s draft report on 15 July 2021, outlining the importance of the target and offering recommendations on how to achieve this ambitious but realistic goal.

The EU4Health 2021 Work Programme: a missed opportunity to support European health NGOs
|

EPHA together with a number of European health and patient NGOs (including ENSP) has expressed its deep regret that the operating grant mechanism, which helps build capacity and supports the long-term contribution of civil society health organisations has been discontinued in the 2021-2022 work programme of the landmark EU4Health programme.
Signing organisations call on HaDEA and the European Commission, as part of the 2021 calls for proposals, to ensure that a broader range of calls are opened up to allow for applications and contributions from NGOs.
Looking ahead to 2022, we call on the European Commission to restore Operating Grants as a financing mechanism to provide a strong foundation for the contribution of NGOs, as part of the 2022 work programme, and to engage meaningfully with NGOs and the European Parliament on decisions on the future of the EU4Health programme, respecting the provisions of the EU4Health regulation |
