Over 100 Organisations Call on Social Media Companies to End Nicotine Pouch Advertising

More than 100 public health and other organizations from 53 countries including ENSP are calling on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter to immediately end the promotion of nicotine pouches on their platforms, including prohibiting paid promotion by influencers.
A letter sent to the CEOs of these companies describes how tobacco companies like British American Tobacco are using social media to market highly addictive nicotine pouches like Velo to millions of social media users worldwide. The marketing content often features young, high-profile influencers engaged in sports activities, suggesting nicotine pouches promote a healthy, active lifestyle. On Instagram, British American Tobacco has implied that Velo can be used to keep teeth white. In several instances, influencers offer special “promo codes” to followers to promote the sale of nicotine pouches on social media platforms, according to the letter.
“For years, tobacco companies have used social media platforms to advertise highly addictive products to young people,” said Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. “Social media platforms have a responsibility to protect their users from the predatory marketing tactics of Big Tobacco – it’s time for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter to end their complicity in Big Tobacco’s campaign to addict the next generation.”

1 November: the launch of 2021 Global Progress Report on Implementation of the WHO FCTC

The Convention Secretariat will officially launch the 2021 Global Progress Report on Implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) during the dedicated webinar on 1 November 2021 (11:00-12:30 CET).
The 2021 Global Progress Report on Implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC), the ninth in this series, is derived from the information received from the Parties in the 2020 reporting cycle, as well as any updates received from them in early 2021. This Report also contains the first report on the indicators to monitor the “Global Strategy to Accelerate Tobacco Control: Advancing Sustainable Development through the Implementation of the WHO FCTC 2019–2025”.
As the previous ones, this Report provides key information for the COP enabling it to adopt strategic decisions that guide Parties’ implementation of the Convention.
The 2021 Global Progress Report on Implementation of the WHO FCTC will be available in English in the dedicated page under the WHO FCTC website.

Ghana joins the WHO FCTC Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products

The Secretariat of the WHO FCTC welcomes Ghana to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products community. Adopted by consensus on 12 November 2012 at the fifth session of the Conference of the Parties to The WHO FCTC, the Protocol counts today 64 countries that wish to make a change in tobacco control.

4 November: Workshop on tobacco endgame strategies

On 4 November 2021, from 13:00 to 15:00 (UTC), the WHO FCTC Knowledge Hub on Surveillance together with partners from the EU Joint Action on Tobacco Control 2 will organise the workshop "How to develop, implement and evaluate endgame strategies? Case studies from Europe".
This workshop is intended for policy makers, regulators, and researchers to learn from case studies of countries with official tobacco endgame strategies, and from countries that have already taken steps towards developing these strategies. Moreover, it will provide an opportunity to exchange information and experiences of developing, implementing, and evaluating forward-looking tobacco control policies.
The discussions will specifically address the goal of Tobacco-Free Generation set in Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, and how to bridge the gap to achieve a tobacco-free Europe. The workshop can also provide a forum for discussion in other regions, depending on the participation from different regions.

The price of cigarettes increases in Belgium

The cost of a pack of cigarettes will increase by 25 centimes, as part of the Belgian government’s budget agreement. This is a result of increased tax duties on tobacco and, combined with other measured, it aims at reducing the financial burden on the middle class. Concerning e-cigarettes, the government will follow the European directive, planned to be published at the latest in 2023.
