French Alliance Contre le Tabac and ENSP World No Tobacco Day conference in Brussels

Within the framework of the development of the “Denormalisation of tobacco in France” program conducted by ACT-Alliance Contre le Tabac, prior to the World No Tobacco Day on Tuesday May 31st 2022, for which the WHO-World Health Organisation has chosen the theme “Tobacco: Threat to our environment”, ACT-Alliance Contre le Tabac and the European Network for Smoking & Tobacco Prevention (ENSP) in collaboration with WHO Regional Office for Europe, will organize on May 24th in Brussels, the one-day Conference: "Big Tobacco's Greenwashing - a threat for tobacco control in the European Union".

 

Dedicated to European stakeholders active both in tobacco control and in the environmental sector, the conference will be held from 9h30 to 16h30, and it will focus on the environmental impact of the tobacco industry & the strategy it uses to greenwash its actions.

 

WHO representatives from the European office will also use the occasion to reveal the 2022 World No Tobacco Day awards.

The event is supported by the European Cancer Patients Coalition (ECPC), Smokefree Partnership (SFP), European Respiratory Society (ERS) and European Lung Foundation (ELF).

2021 EU Health Award on Cancer Prevention

1st Winner: George D. Behrakis Research Lab, Helenic Cancer Society

For the 2021 edition of the EU Health Award, the European Commission rewarded outstanding initiatives by NGOs (or other civil society organisations), and educational institutions seeking to promote communication and health literacy on cancer prevention among children and young people (from 6 to 24 years old) and community-based initiatives alleviating the mental health impact of COVID-19.
110 applications from 15 different EU countries were submitted and examined against the Award criteria. The European Commission selected the shortlisted and winning initiatives based on an evaluation by a Jury composed of Commission officials and external high-level experts.
The 1st Winner selected for the Award on Cancer Prevention in the NGOs category was George D. Behrakis Research Lab, Hellenic Cancer Society. 
 

Past ENSP President and current President of the ENSP Scientific Committee, Prof Panagiotis Behrakis is a Pulmonologist-Intensivist, board-certified in three specialties, Pulmonary Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. He is the founder of “George D. Behrakis RESEARCH LAB” of the Hellenic Cancer Society and among many acknowledgments, it is worthy to note its successful actions related to tobacco control conducted both at the national level in Greece and at the international level, being a focal point for European and International Institutions.

 

Together with Vergina Vyzikidou, the research assistant at the “George D Behrakis RESEARCH LAB”, they received the prize during the European Commission's Ceremony.

 
The SMOKE FREE GREECE initiative coordinates a series of actions aiming to reduce the use of tobacco products in Greece, with a special focus on youth. Investing in health education of school-age children, SMOKE FREE GREECE has contributed to reducing overall smoking prevalence and smoking initiation among adolescents in Greece.

After discussions with our partners, colleagues, and after a few requests received, we have decided to extend the deadline for submissions.

 

All interested authors have now more time to submit their entries because the deadline for abstracts is now extended until 31 May 2022 at 23:59 CET! 

 

If you have already sent your abstract, you can still make adjustments or edits until the final deadline.

The 7th ENSP European Conference on Tobacco Control (ECTC) will take place between 6 and 8 July 2022, in Greece. The registration is now open!

2 June: WHO-UNEP WNTD Webinar

Fighting tobacco product waste

O June 2, 2022, at 13:30 CET, the WHO in collaboration with UNEP will host a webinar in the context of World No Tobacco Day, entitled "Fighting tobacco product waste: Holding the tobacco industry accountable for its environmental footprint".

 

Tobacco control experts and environmental advocates from around the world will join our roundtable discussion to connect the dots between Extended Producer Responsibility, tobacco industry liability and polluter pays principle. Panelists will discuss policy options for mitigating tobacco product waste, which will include case studies from Kigali and San Francisco.

 

This webinar aims to shed light on the global detrimental impact of tobacco product waste on environment, economy, societies, human health, biodiversity and water bodies; and to provide clarity on the policy concept of Extended Producer Responsibility and its practical application by presenting case studies.

The 4th European Lifestyle Medicine Congress will take place in Athens, Greece, between the 7th – 9th of October 2022 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. A multitude of sessions is prepared for this edition, such as interactive workshops with innovative topics and discussions between international lifestyle experts.

Slovenia moves a step forward to a tobacco-free society

Slovenia demonstrates again its success in terms of the implementation of the national policy of tobacco control measures, which goes hand in hand with its strong public health advocacy sector.

 

Recently, the Slovenian Parliament has adopted the “Strategy for Reducing the Consequences of Tobacco Use for Slovenia Without Tobacco 2022–2030”. The long-term goal of the Strategy is for Slovenia to become a tobacco-free society by 2040, meaning that the share of the population, aged 15 and over who will use tobacco, will not exceed 5 %.

 

On Friday, 13th of May 2022, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia held a press conference where the speakers presented the Strategy. One of the speakers was also Mihaela Lovše, SCTC President and distinguished ENSP member. Congratulations!

Moldova joins the WHO FCTC Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products!

ENSP congratulates and welcomes the Republic of Moldova as a new Party to the Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products! There are now 65 Parties to the Protocol acting in cooperation with each other and working for a global solution to a global problem.

In memory of Dr Arseniy Demin

We were heartbroken by the sad news of the sudden death of Dr Arseniy Demin. ENSP Secretariat, Board, and our Network express our sincere condolences to his father Prof Andrey Demin, a long-standing member of the ENSP community, and all his family. Arseniy was a bright talented young professional with a PhD in medical sciences. He served as a medical doctor specialising in urology and andrology at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Center of the Ministry of Health of Russia. He contributed to the development and translation of the ENSP European Curriculum on Tobacco Treatment and to many ENSP Conferences. He will be missed!
